Leverett Saltonstall is elected governor of Massachusetts.

November 8, 1938

Saltonstall (R), with 733,000 votes [941,456-Galvin], defeats James Michael Curley (D), with 641,000 [793,884-Galvin] to win the first of three consecutive terms. During the campaign, the Boston Evening Transcript describes Saltonstall as having “A Back Bay name and a South Boston face.” Curley taunts Saltonstall by saying he wouldn’t dare show his face in South Boston, but Saltonstall campaigns there and wins the respect of residents for doing so.
